Desiree Cooper is a former attorney, Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist and a 2015 Kresge Artist Fellow. Currently a freelance writer, author and speaker, she is a national advocate for reproductive freedom. As the communications director for Planned Parenthood of Michigan from 2010 - 2016, she won the 2013 Headliner Award from the Detroit Association for Women in Communications, and the 2014 N.O.W. Harriet Tubman Community Service Award. In 2018, she released a short film, “The Choice,” which has won medals in film festivals from Berlin to California. She is the author of the award-winning collection of flash fiction, Know the Mother (2016) and a contributor to the seminal anthology of women’s writing on abortion, Choice Words: Writers on Abortion (2020).
